I am happy to share my review of  Awakening Shakti: The Transformative Power of the Goddesses of Yoga by Sally Kempton. Sally shares her potent formula for spiritual awakening, outer abundance, inner freedom and deep intimacy through the exploration of the Goddesses of yoga.

This book had me hooked  as I read Sally’s description of Sacred Feminism. Kempton says,  “I like to think of goddess practice as a form of sacred feminism—not political feminism, but feminism of the soul. To be a sacred feminist is to be a lover of the feminine face of God as she appears in the world, in culture, and also in our own psyche and soul—while also recognizing that the feminine can never be separated from her masculine other half.”

This book is a scrumptious user’s manual  for connecting to the sacred feminine through the great goddesses of the Hindu  pantheon. The intention is to help you open the layers of your soul that are related to these particular energies and learn the practices that invoke them.  You’ll find visualizations, guided meditations, mantras and divinely feminine stories that invite every woman to embody the divine feminine in her life.

If you want to learn more about the Goddessess of Yoga, read this book!

I began reading Awakening Shakti at the beginning of Navaratri (nine nights). Navratri is one of the biggest Hindu festivals and is celebrated for nine nights to honor Goddess Durga, the most powerful Goddess of Hindu mythology.

While in India during Navratri several years ago, Sally Kempton was sharing a story and became aware of how the feminine energies of the Goddess manifested blessings in her life. After this experience she began actively giving courses about how Goddess energies manifest in women, which she refers to as our ‘different flavors of love.’ Sally’s students were so radically impacted by these Goddess teachings that she entered into the writing process of this elegantly written manuscript.

Most of us have yet to experience the full potential of our inner feminine energies. When you know these powers for what they are, they heighten your capacity to open spiritually, love more deeply and fearlessly, create with greater mastery. In Awakening Shakti, you will learn how to recognize and invite:

  • Kali, bringer of strength, fierce love, and untamed freedom
  • Lakshmi, who confers prosperity and beauty
  • Saraswati, for clarity of communication and intuition
  • Radha, who carries the divine energy of spiritual longing
  • Bhuvaneshvari, who creates the space for sacred transformation
  • Parvati, to awaken creativity and the capacity to love

Awakening Shakti provides a practical guide for activating the currents of the divine feminine in every aspect of your life.

This book inspired me to connect with a couple of these feminines energies.  I resonated deeply with the energy of Lakshmi and  learned how to offer salutations to the great Goddess of fortune, love, and integrity. I enjoy practicing the Lakshmi cleansing ritual when  showering or settling in for a relaxing soak.  I have the 4 of cups Goddess Card on my altar right now.  I drew the card after inviting Lakshmi to be present with me.

What I learned while reading this book is that the practice of meditating on a deity is really about bringing the sacred feminine energies forward so we can explore and perhaps flaunt the qualities we find in ourselves.

I invite you to learn more about the Goddesses of Yoga.  Meditate on the Goddesses that speak to you. Ask how you can access their energies in your life. Invite the Goddesses to be present with you now.
