Titiana, Queen of the Faeries by Lisbeth Cheever-Gessaman at She Who IsTitiana, Queen of the Faeries by Lisbeth Cheever-Gessaman

Like waves… we are moved by the endless rhythm of ebb and flow.

From the moment we are conceived in the vast ocean of the cosmic womb, we begin our sacred journey to self through an ever evolving passage of time. Throughout the span of our years, we are given countless opportunities to flow with these undeniable energies of change.

Our sacred rites of passage are many: From innocent girl with budding breasts to woman – She who bleeds but does not die. From impassioned lover to She who births spirit into reality and is forever changed. Women innately know this circle and spiral dance because we are initiated into it time, and time again.

With every experience, and at every stage, we age and are transformed. We come to fully understand and trust that every change and each transition follows this endless and holy cycle of awareness; growth; letting go of what no longer fits/works/or is needed; rest; followed by renewal; and then, a new beginning.

There has never been a moment when we were not actively becoming, changing, aging. We are all daughters of Changing Woman. We know we cannot remain the same. Yet, between the ages of thirty and fifty, somehow the word, the thought and the act of aging suddenly takes on a new meaning – one enshrouded with fear:

  • Fear of growing old, useless, worthless or helpless.
  • Fear of losing our beauty, passion, sexuality and power.
  • Fear of being undesirable, unwanted, or unloved.
  • Fear of no longer recognizing who we are, or our perceived sense of self.

Why do we allow these fears to enslave, cripple, deceive and torment us?…

Sister, the reasons are many. You know them as well as I do, so, let’s not focus on them. Rather, let’s turn our attention toward celebrating our birth rite – Transformation!

“We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.”
– Anais Nin

Like the phases of the moon, age is an illusion. We know that we are only as old, or as young as we feel, or believe that we are at any given moment in time. It’s all relative. It is simply a matter of perspective. We know this… So why do we still fear change?

Perhaps, it is because we are not embracing the fullness of our being… and instead, compartmentalizing ourselves. This is cause enough for anyone to feel scattered, lost or afraid, because it makes us feel like we are lacking something, when we aren’t!

Like the mysterious moon… we dance with the cycles of shadow and light.

When we expose our shadows, the truth of who we are is revealed. When we embrace the hidden, the fears that veil the fullness of who we are, vanish. In this new light, we realize that we are truly whole, whether we are passing through the dark nights of our soul, or glowing in the full radiance of our being. By celebrating all aspects of who we are, at every age, we empower our self to live fearlessly from a place of true authenticity.

I know it is not easy to embrace our dull shadows (wrinkled or thinning skin, silver tresses, sagging breasts, etc.) when we live in a world that worships the brightness of youth, but, we must. When we release the critical voices and learn to celebrate the pale beauty that hides in the spaces where we are shunned or ignored, we reclaim our value, we give meaning to our life, and we pave the path for our daughters empowerment.

A rose would not be as beautiful if it remained forever a bud. The fullness of its fragrance would never be known. Even with its wilting petals and fading colour, there is a certain supple beauty that transcends expectation. Our physical changes, likewise, open and are made visible in this same way so that we can transition into an even deeper understanding and truth of our own beauty.

“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” -Anais Nin

It is impossible to celebrate our transformations if our thoughts about our self are tainted with regret, self-doubt, shame, guilt, judgment or fear. As we age, it is vitally important that we continue to care for and express our self in ways that serve our higher purpose.

When we seek and find ways to honor and celebrate who we are, NOW, in every given moment, we are able to remain authentically beautiful because we have deemed sacred the unfolding of who we are.

Like a rose blossom… we are forever ravished by the relentless process of unfolding.

When we open ourselves up and gracefully dance with the passage of time, our wisdom is revealed, our essence becomes more fragrant, and we find ourselves utterly taken by the sensual pleasures of being genuinely and completely in love with our self and our life.

Remember:

It is the process of flowing and the willingness to open and blossom that reveals your hidden beauty, and brings fullness to your life. Embrace it, and be beautiful at every age!
