“I take full responsibility for my choices.” – Edie Weinstein

Here is a brief synopsis of our conversation. Please do make time to listen to our podcast to experience the full energetic connection of our conversation.
I’d love to begin by having you tell us a little about your alter-ego “Feather” and how she and laughter have helped you heal your emotional wounds.
Feather was born in the mid 1990’s when my husband was in the throes of Hepatitis C, which is a serious liver condition that left unsuccessfully treated can become liver cancer or cirrhosis and eventually take the person’s life. Ultimately that is what happened when he passed in 1998. In the interceding years between his diagnosis in 1992 and his death, he was determined to live as full a life as possible. We became friends with a woman who was a clown who worked with Patch Adams and she introduced us to the art. He did a bit of clowning too and he noticed a reduction in pain as a result. The initial incarnation of Feather donned a white curly haired wig, wore a red and white heart embellished beach cover up, heavy white face makeup with a red heart on one cheek and a rainbow on the other and angel wings. She has since evolved into something a bit lighter….faerie/butterfly wings, my own short cropped hair, glitter on my face (the heavier makeup didn’t do wonders for my skin): and a magic wand. Being able to find ‘the bless in the mess’ and laugh in the face of pain, made all the difference in the world. After Michael died, I did some volunteer clownin’ around with Gilda’s Club and Gift of Life Donor Program. Helping others lighten up, did the same for me. Even now, I can’t help but smile when I act goofy, even without the costume. Laughter is good medicine.
What personal transformation have you experiences in the last 12 months?
Huge! Every day is transformative. My growing edge is about feeling as if I am ‘enough’. That monkey mind inner critic has long chattered at me about how long things are taking, if I’m ‘all that and a bag of chips’, then how come I’m not where I think I ought to be with regard to career, income, opportunities and why the heck Oprah hasn’t called. As a result, I wrote an article called Be Your Own Oprah. In the past year, I launched a radio show called It’s All About Relationships, (www.vividlife.me), have been writing for an increasing number of publications, speaking in more venues, connecting with heart and soul opening people (you included:), being more visible, all of which fly in the face of the monkey mind’s yammering, so there! I attended a weekend workshop called The Woman Within and it brought me face to face with fears and limiting beliefs about my worthiness to receive and to allow others to take care of me, rather than always feeling like a caretaker who exhibits ‘savior behavior’. I am opening to allowing a partner back into my life, as well.
What are your favorite sacred feminine rituals?
I love massage. Surrendering to the touch of a trusted massage therapist, closing my eyes, letting myself be cared for is nourishing on all levels. I enjoy drumming in community which forms a web of sound and healing sent up to the heavens. In the summer I attend a drumming circle in a park outside a library in Philadelphia. I am also part of women’s circles in which we chant, drum, set intention and support each other in manna-festing our dreams and desires. I set intention myself in writing and out loud, releasing those prayers to the Universe.
How else do you embody being a sovereign Goddess?
I have learned that I alone get to decide my life path, and invite others to accompany me if they choose. I take full responsibility for my choices rather than feeling restricted by the actions of others. I choose how I dress, how I interact with others, being less concerned about people pleasing than I was a decade or so ago. I attract other Divine Beings (soul friends, kindred spirits) to experience magic with me.
What was your inspiration for The Bliss Mistress Guide?
I was inspired by the teachings of Joseph Campbell who coined the phrase Follow Your Bliss. It occurred to me that as cool as that advice was, if I was to follow my bliss, it would still be something outside of me. I wondered what it would mean to BYOB (Be Your Own Bliss) and I began teaching that class. On my way in to one I was teaching at a daylong retreat, a participant commented “Oh, you’re the Bliss Master who is going to tell us how to live blissfully.” I smiled, thanked her and then taught the class. Later that night, I was on the phone with my friend Jaz and shared the story with him. Although he was cross country in San Fran and I was here near Philly, I could almost see the sparkle in his eye when he answered, “Not Bliss Master…Bliss Mistress.” and so I became. He added that if I was going to call myself by that name, I had better be living it. Each day, I engage in blissful activities, like this one. I have been a writer for as long as I can remember and a professional since 1988. I can’t NOT write, so that is clearly one of my ‘blisses’. People had been asking for years when I would write a book. It felt daunting, since I was accustomed to writing articles on deadline. A friend suggested writing one chapter at a time as if each was a distinct article and when I had enough, the book would be born. I came up with 60 and then narrowed them down to 30 slice of life (Chicken Soup For the Soul genre) stories with a bonus chapter of the interview that I did with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. It was also a gift to my parents who had always been my most ardent cheerleaders. I finished the book while I sat by my mother’s bedside while she was on hospice from May-November of 2010 and the last two chapters were about our hospice journey.
