beauty

I am a lover of beautiful people, places and things. Here’s what came up for me when I was asked to describe what beauty means to me.

Beauty

I’m blown away by the beauty of the natural world.

  • I see beauty in the way the dragonfly floats through the air.
  • I think about the allure, the magic of witnessing a sunrise or sunset.
  • The ethereal elegance of a great Elm tree.
  • The way the sunlight filters through the treetops.
  • The majesty of mountains at dawn, and the serenity of an inland lake at dusk.
  • The sound of waves rushing back and forth on the beach.
  • My Christmas Cactus’ prolific, hot pink flowers.

Beauty in the people I love

  • Being held in my husband’s arms is heaven on earth.
  • The crooked smile, and knowing eyes of my daughters beautiful face.
  • The way my Mom cares for all living creatures.
  • A dear friend who loves ALL of me.
  • The mirror of great courage shared throughout my feminine lineage.
  • The support freely shared in the circles I belong to.
  • Fond memories of the kind people who have left this earth walk.

Beauty in the written word

  • The Tao De Ching is a beautiful read.
  • The lovely poetry of Hafiz, Rumi, Gibran and Angelou.
  • The Artist’s Way, by Julie Cameron is a gorgeous way to heal and grow.
  • Autobiography of a Yogi, by Paramahansa Yogananda is a magical read.
  • The Bridge Across Forever, by Richard Bach opened my mind.
  • Ellen Gilchist’s quirky characters make me smile.
  • I am grateful for the ability to read.

Beautiful music

  • I find beauty in discovering a new artist on Pandora or Spotify.
  • Graceland by Paul Simon is one of my favorite albums. Ever.
  • The soulful music of Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt and Brian Ferry.
  • The ecstatic Kirtan music of Dave Stringer and Krishna Das.
  • The musical stylings of David Byrne, Elvis Costello, and Adam Levine.
  • I love the varied offerings of every genre of music
  • The sound and vibration of OM chanted at the end of Yoga class.

How fortunate we are to be surrounded by so much great, and crushing beauty…

Absolutely beautiful, Shann! Thank you sharing such wonderful lists. I haven’t read that book from Richard Bach, so I will have to check it out. And I completely agree that being in my sweetie’s arms is such a beautiful gift. I am constantly in awe of Oregon’s beauty. While I still haven’t seen much of the state, what I have seen is definitely awe-inspiring. Your beach pictures always remind me of beauty, too. I also equate loving souls with beauty. The kind of love where you can feel it and just want to soak it up. XO

      Hi Jodi,

I promise that you will love the book from Richard Bach! You are a loving soul!

I think we all should make a list like this once a week/month. Splendid! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, if we see something as ‘ugly’ perhaps we are missing something beautiful; my latest blog is about the owl’s death omen, when really it was the beautiful song of a whipporwhil…. Life is a perception best discovered when viewing harmony. Blessings!

      Hi Tina,

Big love and thanks for your kindness. I agree that viewing and being in harmony is one of life’s great gifts.

Shann, thanks for sharing this list and reminding us all that beauty is all around us when we are fully present in the moment.

      HI Linda,

My pleasure! All we have to do is settle down and look around. Thanks for your comment. XO

What a lovely post, thank you so much for sharing with us what beauty means to you and reminding me (on a very foggy, rainy day) how much beauty there is in this world. My hubby arrives home today after a week away and I can’t wait to be in his arms again…the most beautiful place in the world for me. xxx

      Hi Jo,

Thank you! Enjoy your husband. =)

  • Tanja @ Crystal Clarity Nov 16, 2012, 5:44 am

There’s definitely beauty in posts like this one too, Shann. And I resonate with the beauty you mention in music and in the natural world too. And of course, as a writer, I drink in the beauty of a sentence that’s worded *exactly right*.

Plus, I love the beauty of craftsmanship – something that’s simple, clean and functional; or something with just the right level of decoration for the mood I’m in at that moment.

So many places to find beauty, and so many senses to appreciate it with – thank you for reminding me!

      Hi Tanja,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on beauty. Create a great weekend.

What a beautiful post! And a fabulous idea–it reminds me a bit of a gratitude list, only more specific. I’m wondering now what sorts of lists I could make to remind me of the wonders in my world. Thank you!

    • Shann Nov 19, 2012, 7:23 pm

Thank you Nancy, I suspect your lists will be extraordinary! Life is more interesting when we walk in beauty.
